Depression, anxiety is linked to poor diet habit : Study

A study undertaken to ascertain relation between diet intake and mood disorders has revealed that poor intake worsens problems mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. According to researchers, including those from University of Gothenburg, Sweden, there are areas where this ink between diet and mental health is established beyond doubt.

On a positive note, the study indicates that Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables and olive oil, benefits mental health by offering protection against depression and anxiety. However, foods such as Vitamin D supplements, those associated with autism showed no evidence of having any adverse effect on mental health conditions, researchers noted.

Citing an example of how some foods may specifically improve mental health, the researchers said nutrition in the womb can have significant effects on brain function of the child later in life.
