The cost of medicare in New York has been spiralling in recent times. According to a report in New York State Health Foundation, costs of medicare in New York grew faster than any other state in USA between 2013 and 2017. BY 2017, New York was 8th highest in healthcare expenses with per-person spending at $6,335.
Though New York has taken steps to arrest the rising cost by passing a legislation preventing surprise bills that patients pay when they are seen by out-of-network doctor at an in-network hospital, but the cost of certain healthcare procedures have seen steep rise in recent years. And since the patients cannot compare the prices at different hospitals, they end up paying big sum of money.
To counter this, New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, plans to launch a website called NYHealthcareCompare in association with Department of Health, Department of Financial Services, and the New York State Digital and Media Services Center.
While patients can refer the website to calculate health costs, it is feared that it would not give them the exact out-of-pocket cost as the website only lists provider charges, and not the prices that the hospital negotiate with the insurer.
