The normal body temperature of any human being is 37-degree Celsius (98.4°F). One degree rise in temperature above the normal is considered as fever. Here it is important to know that fever is not a disease, it is a symptom or a sign of imbalance in the body. Infections are one of the main causes of fever, but fever is mostly a body response to fight off these infections. Still, you can manage fever with some self-care treatment tips at home before consulting the doctor. A low-grade fever is 100-102-degree F and the temperature above this is high-grade fever. Some major associated symptoms that can be seen are chills, sweating, headache, muscle ache, appetite loss, fatigue, lethargy.

Causes – Infection, autoimmune disorder, heat exhaustion, immunization vaccines, an inflammatory disorder, side effects of some medications.

Home remedies

Stay hydrated – In fever, our body needs extra water to compensate for high temperatures because there is more water loss in the body. It is called dehydration. You can have coconut water, ORS, orange juice, and lime juice.

Lukewarm bath - Have a bath with lukewarm water as it is soothing and relieves the pain in the muscles and joints.

Rest - A person having a fever should take an adequate amount of rest until the fever is gone. The body requires extra energy to fight off fever. Any physical stress can have ill effects. 

Over-the-counter medicines – There are many OTC medicines available like paracetamol, ibuprofen that can be given. But for infants and kids, do consult a doctor before giving medicine.

Foods to eat

Fruits and vegetables – Vegetables like carrot, spinach, and pumpkin can provide nutrients and minerals. Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapes are good sources of vitamin C and flavonoids that help boost immunity. You can also have berries, kiwis, and apples.

Coconut water - Coconut water is full of essential fluids and electrolytes which the body requires. It is an excellent source of hydration. 

Teas – You can have herbal tea, ginger tea, black pepper tea, tulsi tea. Tea leaves contain polyphenol, flavonoid, and catechin which provide protection against viruses or bacteria.

Soups – One can take veg soup, tomato soup, etc to increase the fluid intake and regulate body temperature. 

Always follow good hygiene habits and a healthy lifestyle to prevent any infections or diseases. If these home remedies do not improve the symptoms of fever, do consult your doctor for further diagnosis and treatment.
