5 Home remedies to treat kidney stones

The kidney plays some of the important functions of our body like eliminating waste and toxins, maintaining fluid balance, and purifying blood. Here are some home remedies that can help treat small kidney stones.

Kidney health or renal health plays a significant role in leading a healthy life. The kidney is our natural filter. The lack of water or shortage of water in the body gives rise to kidney stones. Kidney stones are the hard deposits of salt and mineral crystals. Now, there are advanced treatment procedures for kidney stones with effective results. Though there are few home remedies that are helpful for treating small kidney stones.

Water – Sufficient hydration is essential in keeping kidneys healthy and getting rid of kidney stones naturally. Drinking lots of water keeps you hydrated and also aids in flushing out the toxins and waste products that are responsible for the formation of stones.

Pomegranate juice – It has strong antioxidant and astringent properties and helps prevent stone formation. This also promotes the easy passage of stones. You can have fruit or fruit juice with seeds.

Lemon juice – Citrate found in lemon, helps in breaking down calcium stones. You can have a glass of lemon juice, first thing in the morning (without sugar) or a few hours after dinner. This may help in the breakdown of stones.

Wheatgrass – Wheatgrass juice is beneficial in treating kidney stones. As it is a good diuretic, it increases the urine output, thus helping in eliminating smaller stones. The antioxidant property helps in getting rid of minerals and salts that lead to the formation of stones.

Basil leaves – Basil leaves act by lowering the uric acid levels and dissolving stones. A teaspoon of basil extract in the morning can help in preventing kidney stones.

Dandelion root juice – This promotes bile secretion and helps in eliminating toxins from the body. Drinking 2 cups of dandelion tea can very well prevent stone formation.

Dietary Do’s and Dont’s

1. Drink plenty of water. You can have fruits and vegetables with high water content, this will help in increasing liquid content in the body.

2. Avoid oxalate-rich foods like peanuts, chocolate, and sweet potatoes. Avoid red meat also.

3. Avoid taking alcohol as it increases uric acid level which is bad for kidney stone patients.

4. You can include (small quantity) dairy products in your diet such as yogurt, cheese.
